IBM and Bell Atlantic team on building networked homes

Today's new home buyers have more options than ever when it comes to making their houses work for them -- from whole-house wiring for high-speed Internet multimedia connectivity to automating the operation of consumer appliances.

In its most recent initiative to deliver new technology solutions for consumers’ lifestyles and needs, IBM has teamed with Bell Atlantic to install IBM Home Director home networking systems in homes throughout the northeastern United States. Now home owners throughout the Bell Atlantic operating area may be able to move into houses wired with some of the most advanced home networking technology available.

In-home PC networking and shared video capabilities are among the services planned as Bell Atlantic becomes an IBM Authorized Home Systems Integrator. Homes equipped by IBM and Bell Atlantic Communications and Construction Services, a subsidiary of Bell Atlantic, will be able to network their computers, distribute the signal from a single VCR or DVD player to any TV, share an Internet signal, and be equipped to take advantage of future home networking advances and devices.

The foundation for the IBM Home Director System is the Home Network Connection Center, the in-home hub for a complete structured wiring network solution. The Connection Center brings together the various wiring types in the home including coaxial, category 5, and telephone — and allows data to flow across the network.

Read on to find out how you can bring advanced IBM consumer technologies home with you.
